影片中，安田顯飾演儿子智，他性格軟弱、隨波逐流，夢想是成為漫畫家。母親明子由老戲骨倍賞美津子飾演，她平日充滿活力，夢想是能見到偶像豐川悅司。
影片描繪了智被告知母親患上癌症、一起度過最后的時光、以及母親過世后的生活。“吃掉遺骨”聽上去可怕，但與“吃掉胰髒”一樣，本質上是受神道教“聯結”理念的影響，傳達的其實是至純的愛，讓死去的生命在活著的生命中“復活”的願景。
原著漫畫2013年在漫畫網站連載，作者宮川悟史根據自己的親身体驗，記錄了母親最后的日子，以及對母親的感恩和愛。安田顯在片中飾演主人公悟史，從小就身体不好很愛哭，每次都是堅强的母親幫助他，兩年前母親突然查出癌症，曾經用來安慰悟史的話語現在都要由他說給母親聽，他發誓要幫助母親，為了母親做了很多嘗試，還遇到了体貼的女友真里。母親還是在2012年春天去世了，與母親死別一年后，父親兄弟都開始了新生活，而悟史卻突然收到了母親的禮物。
